AUTISM ASSESSMENTS

Assessing and diagnosing autism is a detailed process.

It typically involves input from one or more health professionals such as a paediatrician, GP, child psychologist, child health nurse or speech therapist working together to build a comprehensive picture.  The assessment process includes a number of standardised assessments as well as conversations with caregivers and observations to enable the experts to distinguish genuine signs of autism from behaviours that may be mistaken for it.

Health professionals will look at a child’s strengths and characteristics as well as their differences and difficulties across key areas such as communication, social interaction and engagement, daily living skills and cognitive abilities.  Your insights as a parent or caregiver are a vital part of this process.

At Sydney Children's Practice, our autism diagnostic assessments  follow the Australian national guidelines for autism diagnosis.  These were first introduced in 2018, and updated in 2023 to reflect new evidence and best practices.

An autism assessment helps everyone involved in your child’s care; family members, teachers and health professionals, understand how your child experiences the world. It also offers a foundation for meaningful support and may help your child better understand their own strengths, preferences and needs.

WHEN TO SEEK AN AUSTISM ASSESSMENT

If you think that your child may be on the Autism Spectrum, a good starting point is to talk to someone who can help you evaluate whether a formal autism assessment is worthwhile.  You may wish to chat to your GP or the relevant person at your child’s school.  You can also make an appointment with a psychologist with expertise in autism.

Sydney Children’s Practice offers autism spectrum assessments and our psychologists who conduct these have a broad range of experience working with children as well as adults.

Note while a referral is not required, that you will need a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist under the Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder (CND) assessment pathway to be considered for a Medicare rebate.

A diagnosis may also mean that your child is eligible for funding support through the NDIS, Centrelink or their school.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AT AN AUTISM ASSESSMENT

Autism assessments should only be conducted by trained health professionals using standardised tools designed to determine whether a child meets the diagnostic criteria for autism.

Autism assessments are structured to gather a detailed picture of your child’s strengths, preferences and areas where they may need support.

It’s completely normal for children and parents to feel a little nervous about the assessment. Our child therapists are experienced in working with children and aim to make the experience as engaging and comfortable as possible.  In fact, many children find the activities enjoyable!

During the assessment, the clinician will spend time getting to know your child through conversation and play-based tasks. These help us understand what your child enjoys, where they thrive, and where they may be finding things more challenging.

We’ll also speak with you about your child’s daily routines, social engagement, and developmental history to ensure we gain a complete understanding of their needs and experiences.

OUR APPROACH

At Sydney Children’s Practice, we take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to autism assessments. All assessments are aligned with the Australian national guidelines and conducted by registered psychologists with additional training in neurodevelopmental conditions.

Our team of child psychologists is not only highly trained but also warm, empathetic, and committed to making the process as comfortable and informative as possible for families seeking an Autism Assessment & Diagnosis in Sydney.

METHODS WE USE FOR AUTISM ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSIS

At Sydney Children’s Practice, we use gold-standard assessment tools and evidence-based practices to determine whether a child meets the diagnostic criteria for autism.

Each assessment is tailored to the child’s age, developmental profile, and presenting concerns. We draw on a combination of structured observation, parent interviews, rating scales, and cognitive testing to build a comprehensive picture.

The tools we commonly use include:

  • ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition): a structured, play-based session with your child or adolescent. This helps us observe social interaction, communication, and any restricted or repetitive behaviours.

  • ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised): a detailed interview with you as the parent or caregiver, exploring your child’s developmental history and autism-related characteristics over time.

  • ASRS (Autism Spectrum Rating Scales): often used as an initial screening tool to determine whether a full diagnostic assessment is appropriate.

  • SRS-2 (Social Responsiveness Scale – Second Edition): completed by parents and teachers, this tool assesses social awareness, communication, motivation, and cognitive flexibility.

  • GARS-3 (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale – Third Edition): a widely used questionnaire measuring the likelihood of autism based on observed behaviours.

  • ABAS-3 (Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System – Third Edition): measures day-to-day skills in communication, self-care, and social functioning to understand how a child is managing in their daily life.

  • Cognitive testing (e.g. WISC-V, WPPSI-IV) is used to assess a child’s intellectual abilities and developmental profile. This is often included to assist with differential diagnosis and planning appropriate supports.

If your child is referred for an autism assessment by a paediatrician, GP, or psychiatrist, we aim to schedule the first appointment within three months of receiving the referral, in line with national guidelines.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL MY CHILD NEED FOR AN AUSTISM   ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSIS?

At Sydney Children’s Practice, an Autism Assessment & Diagnosis typically involves several appointments over a number of weeks. While each assessment is tailored to your child’s needs, the process usually includes the following sessions:

  • Intake session  -  60–90 minutes with parent or caregiver

  • ADOS-2 session - Approximately 1 hour with your child or adolescent

  • ADI-R Interview - 2.5–3 hours with parent or caregiver

  • Cognitive assessment (if required)  - Up to 2 hours

  • Feedback session - 50–60 minutes

Initial consult/intake session  -  60 – 90 minutes with the parent or caregiver

ADOS-2 session - one-hour one-on-one structured play or conversation-based session with your child or adolescent (ADOS-2).  This gives the clinician the opportunity to observe their key social-communication behaviours and possible autism traits

ADI-R session  - A 2½ – 3 hour structured interview with you to enable the therapist to fully explore your child’s developmental history, their communication and their behaviours

Cognitive assessment -  A cognitive assessment may be scheduled to assess and clarify the child’s intellectual functioning and/or developmental profile.  This can take up to two hours.

Following these first three meetings, your psychologist will then synthesise all the findings to establish whether or not your child meets the diagnostic criteria for autism. They will prepare a detailed report which will be given to you at your feedback session, which is usually scheduled two to three weeks after the final assessment session.

Feedback session  -   Parents attend a one-hour feedback session where the clinician will present their report and discuss the results, the diagnosis (if there is one) and their recommendations for future support such as NDIS access, therapy and strategies for school.  We understand there can be complex emotions around a diagnosis. ur team takes time to explain everything clearly and compassionately, and we’re here to answer any questions you may have.
