WHEN MIGHT A CHILD BENEFIT FROM SEEING A PSYCHOLOGIST

It is not always easy for parents to know whether a child’s behaviour is part of typical development or a sign that extra support could help. If you are unsure, speaking with a child psychologist can provide clarity and reassurance.

Some signs that a psychological consultation may be beneficial include:

  • Noticeable changes in mood

  • Difficulties with school performance or peer relationships

  • Sleep or appetite changes

  • Problems with concentration or managing emotions

If these challenges are persistent or impacting daily life, it may be helpful to consult a psychologist.

A psychologist can support children and families in managing a wide range of issues, including emotional distress, learning difficulties, and behavioural concerns.  Early support can contribute positively to a child’s wellbeing and development.

In urgent situations, such as when a child is experiencing significant emotional distress or you are concerned about safety or self-harm, it is important to seek immediate professional help.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT : WHAT TO EXPECT

A psychological assessment is a detailed process that helps us understand your child’s thinking, learning, emotions and social development. It involves a series of well-researched and widely used assessment tools that give us insight into how your child is managing across different areas of life.

Areas we may explore include:

  • Cognitive strengths and challenges

  • Learning and academic achievement

  • Developmental milestones

  • Emotional and social functioning

  • Adaptive skills (everyday skills for independence)

Assessments are tailored to the individual and carried out by experienced child psychologists at our Inner West Sydney clinics in Glebe and Stanmore.  Initial assessments typically take 50 minutes.

The assessment process includes direct interaction with your child, observations and information-gathering through questionnaires and interviews with caregivers.  Family, developmental and medical history, along with school information, are also considered.

The outcomes of the assessment guide our recommendations for therapy and form the foundation of an individualised treatment plan to support your child’s progress.

OUR APPROACH

We want families to feel supported from the very first appointment.

Initial Consultation: 60 minutes

This session allows the child therapist to understand your child’s emotional, behavioural and cognitive profile. Where relevant, the psychologist may speak with the parent and child together and/or separately.

Standard Sessions: 50 minutes

Following the initial consultation, your psychologist will recommend further sessions based on your child’s needs. The frequency and duration of therapy will vary depending on the situation. Treatment plans are reviewed regularly to monitor progress.

Support may also include school visits or collaboration with educators, where appropriate, so strategies can be reinforced across different settings.

SEEKING HELP FROM A CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST

It can be difficult to know when to seek psychological support. Many parents wonder whether challenges will pass on their own. However, it is often helpful for both children and their families to act early rather than wait for challenges to escalate.

A psychologist may be able to help when:

  • Concerns have persisted over time

  • Emotional, behavioural or developmental challenges are interfering with daily life

  • There are noticeable changes in sleep, eating or social interaction

  • Your child is finding it to difficult to manage their emotions or is showing signs of distress.

Your child does not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from therapy.  Psychological intervention can assist children in navigating difficult periods and developing resilience for the future.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A PSYCHOLOGIST CONSULTATION

The initial consultation at Sydney Children’s Practice involves understanding your child’s situation in a supportive, calm and non-judgmental space.  Our psychologists take time to understand your child’s situation and work collaboratively with families to set goals and develop strategies. This is typically done through the use of a clinical interview and possibly some questionnaires to be completed by the family and/or young person.

For children under 12, a parent or caregiver will typically attend the consultation. Adolescents over 12 may attend with a parent or caregiver, but may also spend time independently with the psychologist depending on their preference.

Following the assessment, your psychologist will provide feedback and recommendations.

METHODS USED IN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS

Our award-winning Sydney psychologists use a range of well-researched assessment tools that are tailored to your child’s age and needs. These tools are widely recognised in both clinical and educational settings, and help us build a clear understanding of your child’s strengths and challenges.

Some of the tools we may use include:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V A&NZ): measures different areas of thinking and problem solving

  • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV A&NZ): designed for younger children to assess early learning and development

  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition (WIAT-III A&NZ): explores academic skills such as reading, writing and maths

  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition (ADOS-2): supports the assessment of social communication and behaviour

  • Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R): a detailed parent interview used in autism assessments

Together, these tools help us form a complete picture of your child’s development so we can provide accurate recommendations and support.

NUMBER OF SESSIONS

The number of therapy sessions varies and depends on each child’s needs and goals, and how they respond to therapy.

Some children may benefit from a short-term intervention of around six sessions, while others may need longer-term support.

Your child therapist will discuss a proposed treatment plan after the initial consultation and review it regularly with you.

Adjustments can be made depending on your child’s progress.

WHERE TO FIND US

Our psychologists see children and families at our two Inner West Sydney clinics in Glebe and Stanmore. Both locations are professional, welcoming spaces designed to help children feel comfortable and supported.

FEES AND APPOINTMENTS

The cost of sessions depends on the type of support your child needs and the psychologist you see. When you enquire with Sydney Children’s Practice, our team will let you know the fee for the initial consultation for your psychologist and what ongoing sessions will cost.

For formal assessments, such as autism or educational assessments, we can also provide an initial quote outlining the typical cost and what is included. This helps families plan ahead and understand the process with confidence.
